Free Stuff on the Internet
Free email address
You can get a free email address by visiting www.mail.com or www.hotmail.com. These are 'virtual' email addresses, that you use by going to their websites when you need to send or read your email. Instead of using MS Outlook to use your email facilities, you simply go to the mail.com or hotmail.com website with Internet Explorer and enter your email address and password. You also get to choose your own email address when you sign up (if it's not already being used by someone else). Mail.com is preferable, as it seems to run faster and has less intrusive advertising. The advantage of using these virtual email websites is that your email address is permanent, whereas if you use your internet providers email address that was given to you it may change in the future when you change internet service providers. Also, you can access your email on any computer in the world that has internet access and a browser (like Internet Explorer) installed.
Free virus scan
You can go to www.housecall.antivirus.com where you can have your PC scanned for viruses. It takes a few minutes to download some software to your computer the first time you use the service, but if you make the page available offline in your 'Favourites' menu it'll start working very quickly the next time you go back to the website to use the virus scanner.
Free website space
If you need somewhere to put you web-pages there are a number of websites that offer free website hosting, though their offers change constantly. Have a look at the links below, as they have periodically offered free web hosting:
There can be problems using free web hosting, such as advertising that is so intrusive that your site is barely usable, sites being shut down without warning etc. If your site becomes successful (i.e. busy), many web hosts will expect you to start paying or you risk having the site shut down. You can have a professionally hosted site with none of these disadvantages by paying a small monthly fee. If you would rather pay for a reliable website host, click the following link. Hosting is available there for only $3.95 per month.
Free online store
An online store can be set up in minutes, and you have the option of selling your own material (t-shirts, mugs, books etc), and all items are produced for the buyer (or yourself) upon demand. If you have a book, no matter what the size, you can sell it online, and it will professionally printed for your buyers when they order it. If you have t-shirt design, you can upload the images and have the shirts printed for yourself or your customers. Click the banner below to get a store started for free.
File sharing (almost any file you could want for free)
If you need a file of some sort (eg. pictures, software, music, video, manuals) you can't go past the file sharing software. The chances are that someone out there has the file you want and is sharing it. www.limewire.com is where you can download one of the best tools for doing this. Simply download the software at the website and run it to share files along with thousands of other users.
Note: Many of the files shared are covered by copyright laws. Be aware that downloading some of these files may be illegal where you live.
Free tutorials and references
Need to learn how to do something on the internet, like build your own website or something more technical like learn a programming language? The one most highly recommended by Monsoon Computing is at www.w3schools.com. There are tutorials and reference material for most web design and Internet programming languages, including JScript, VBScript, CSS, ASP, XML and HTML.
VBScript - if you want reference material about VBScript programming to make your webpages more interactive you can't go past this webpage http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~sds3/vbscript/. w3schools mentioned above also has VBScript tutorials and reference material.
HTML - Monsoon Computing has a basic webpage design tutorial. The best and simplest procedures to use to put together a simple webpage. Just click here to go to the tutorial. Remember to place the page in your favourites if you want to use the lessons in the future. Ticking the 'Make page available offline' will make the tutorial available for use when you are not on the internet. You can then choose it from your 'Favourites' at any time. This works for almost any tutorial you find on the web.

You can get a free fax number at www.efax.com. Any fax's sent to the number you are given when you sign up are sent to your email address.
