Yamaha outboard engine

I have and outboard engine on a small boat, after having it for about a week, it will not start.  I took it back to the marina, they cleaned the carb, flushed the tank and said it was bad gas.

2 weeks later, with their gas, same thing.  I think the carb needs to be rebuilt / replaced.  Any thoughts?

my new yamaha 115hp fourstroke outboard spins a new 3 blade stainless prop and emits lots of low rpm clatter below 1000rpm....i've been told this is gear lash and the noise is very disturbing...nothing like this on bigger yamahas and nothing on 115hp suzuki...what's wrong with my engine?

We have a 2003 Yamaha 25 short shaft 4 stroke outboard, purcased new in the spring of 2004. It has almost never run properly and has spent far more time in the shop than on the water.  Yamaha says our boat is too small (14.5 foot catamaran style hull) so that the engine can pick up water.  I think their design is flawed as the exhaust mechanism can allow water into the engine if the exhaust port sinks even briefly below water level.  Yamaha did have a service bulletin about this in 2000 or 2001 but claims that the problem was fixed for subsequent model years. I don't think it has. The engine ran fine for the final part of 2005 and was then brought to the dealer for winterizing.  This year it wouldn't start and the dealership says a leak down test shows a 20% loss of pressure in one cylinder.     Anyone with water problems on Yamaha four strokes? I have a Yamaha 90TLRC manufactured in 8/2003. It has been in the shop more than in the water. Won't start. Dealer keeps saying dirty carbs, bad gas, etc.
Is anyone else having a problem with this particular motor?  Have met two similar cases.

sputters and dies wi thin a minute or so.  It seems to idle
a little rough.  the ignition seems fine, carbs were rebuilt
by a dealer.  how do you tune one of these?  what is the little
black box on the side for? (it has a pointer connected to the
carb/control linkage-is this some sort of timing devise?) does
anyone know what the timing shoud be at idle?

How can you check the alternator output on a Yahama 80 hp 4 stroke (1999 model)?
dan

7/12/2007 10:56:50
the same way you check the output of any alternator. for voltage get a voltmeter and check the voltage at the battery terminals while it is running. for cars and trucks it shouldnt go over 14.2v or under 13. under that and it really isnt charging (12v battery at rest is about 12.4v) over 14.2v is overcharging and the acid will start to boil.
i cant say exactly what the recommended voltages should be for that outboard, but batteries are batteries. look for a charge (at a high idle) between those two voltages and you cant be far wrong.

I was given a 1987 40HP Yamaha outboard. It is still mounted on the origonal boat (Chapparel). I don't want the boat. I have removed the electrical stuff (to use again) My problem is how to go about removing the steering , without destroying the motor or steering. I've taken the aluminum nuts off of both sides of the motor and loosened the 2 large nuts directly on the motor. Is this teleflex steering? I've only had boats with tiller steering , all new to me. Do I wiggle the cable out of the bracket? There seems to be a threaded rod that goes all the way across the front of the engine.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ann

I have a 50 horsepower Yamaha motor.  When I go to start the motor from the steering area, if the wheel is turned all the way to the left, the motor will not start and the trim will not move.  If I turn the wheel to the right, the motor will start and trim works.  I can start the motor from the switch on the motor every time.  Once the motor gets going, the motor and trim work either way I turn the wheel.  It seems not to want to start until you get within 5 degrees of going straight.  The motor is about 5 years old.  Any suggestions?  Please e-mail directly with any suggestions to picklesthecat2@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

1997 175 HP Yamaha SW Series developed problems 2 years ago which eventually saolved as a lack of lube on advanced timing lever under flywheel. Unfortunately mechanic thought it was carbs (good fuel prior to ethanol)and took all apart. Engine has not run correctly since (better, but still issues). Symptons: Idle is fair w/no stalling. Acceleration normal. Once on plane and at 3900 rpm (sweet spot 208 GW)rpms instantly jump to 4200, then back to 3000 rpm and then settling even lower. Return throttle to neutral and power up and might run for 20 minutes at 3900 and same scenario repeats. Other yard pulled carbs, cleaned and readjusted and improved slightly, but towards last summer full blown problem returned. Have renewed ignition wire end caps and new plugs each year. Individual fuel pumps satisfactory. Authorized Yamaha dealer mechanic doubts that it could be spark plug/coil pack wire (+-$100 each)as they either work or fail; no intermittent failing? Feels that it is definitely carbs and points back to original (fix) two years prior.
Any suggestions or avenues of further search appreciated.

REPLACED FUEL PUMP ON MY YAMAHA 90 HP 4 STROKE TWICE ALREADY. MOTOR STILL HAS 6 MO. FACTORY WARRANTY. ALL THEY CAN SAY IS BAD GAS. I THINK IT IS JUST A STOCK ANSWER. TO GET FRESHER GAS I WOULD HAVE TO MAKE IT MYSELF. THEY SAID USE CHEVRON, I DID. THEY SAID USE STABILIZER, I DID. THEY SAID DO NOT LET GAS SET IN TANK FOR EXTENDED PERIODS, I DID NOT. IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A LEMON LAW ON OUTBOARDS?

2003 40hp fourstroke jet drive.  Ran fine when we first put it in the water. Sat for 3 weeks and then it ran rough.  Changed the racor fuel filter - no water in the gas - changed the spark plugs and changed all the fuel lines.  Runs much smoother now, but won't move out at high speed. Had a new impeller last year.  Any suggestions?

Hi, Im from Venezuela. I Have a pair of 250HPDI on my 33feet fishing boat. When I Flush my engines with freshwater using ears, past 3-4 minutes, engines bring on the temp alarm, but no indication on the dashboard, and i test that i can put rpms over 3.000 with alarms sound. I did that to test the sistem that automatically must reduce the rpms to 1500 if a bag or any obstruction on impeller.  I am nurvace that if I am boating and a bag or some obstruction made my engine to overhot and I dont listen to alarm, the engine will be damaged by overheat. What can I do??? Thanks

You need to have your water and fuel separator. It separates the gas from the water. Yours is worn out or defected. They don't coast much.

Hopes this helps....

I have a 1987 175hp yamaha and was wondering what it would take to increase it to a 200 or 225. Since all three engine blocks are identical, it seems maybe just jetting or larger carb ventures, most likely engine timing adjustment to the stator. If anyone knows exactly what it would take please let me know. Thanks!

Our outboard starts fine runs for about 5 min then loses all power and runs only at low speed. We have changed the carb , used a differnt gas tank (? dirty fuel), changed the water pump (at one pont alarm would go off we fixed problem with water pump) no further alarm but original loss of power continues to be a problem.
I am starting to feel like we should skuttle the boat in frustration. Does anyone have any solutions aside from a stick of dynamite?

I have had the same problem with 60 horse Yamaha , not starting and I was told it was bad gas. There was water in the gas and I changed the gas took it out on the water again and the same problem. Is it raining in or taking on water somehow. the dealer added a water and fuel separator on the fuel line and that helped. One year later, I can't get it started again.
Leah

11/25/09 10:46:36 AM
Depending on where you are the reason for all of the bad gas is the Ethanol. It breaks down much quicker and on top of that it also attracts the moisture right out of the air. If you run some sort of fuel system cleaner at all times it will help prevent a lot of the running issues. One additive would be the Startron but there are other additives out there as well...

3/13/10 4:28:17 AM
To PM dated 2/14/10. Apparently you have twin engines on your boat (not stated in question.) If so, check the vent hose/line going to the fuel tank. Could be stopped up and not allowing the tank to properly vent (suck air into the tank) therefore not allowing enough fuel to leave the tank and get to the engines. One way to tell for certain in to look at the primer bulbs while running at full throttle underway, if they suck down flat, there's you problem.
Jon

3/18/10 8:57:52 PM
Seems like too many people on here are trying to fix problems that are obviously too complex for them. We go through tons of training every year in order to properly repair problems. I know that I will catch greif for this, but it's called preventative maintanance for a reason. Leave it to the pros and it will cost you less in the long run.

Have a 50hp 2 stroke w/only about 10 hrs. run time. Set up about 4 mons.and could not get gas to start. Still has warranty. Used Yamaha fuel treatment but is now in the shop to get problem fixed. Should I run gas out before I store it or will this help. Was told by yam. dealer that this was not nessary as long as I used yam. stabeliser. Found a station with non ethanol gas and will use this to help with future problems. This is a 2008 motor. Anyone else having the same problem? Yamaha said they would help with cost of fix so must be a problem that others are having as well with this motor.

With a new 225 Yamha 4 stroke 44 hours on it on a new Sea hunt I was all set to be safe and have FUN ! No Way . Did the Yamaha Dealer tell you that you Have a " special filter that will cost you $400 + Very shortly. Yep. Never put more than the 1/3 rule in your boat at a time. Yamaha claims that Phase separation is the problem and any fuel that lasts in your tank more than 30 days could result in this $400 fix. OOPS did Yamaha not tell you about this when you bought their engine? Ohwell they do exclude Fuel issues.. YOUR BAD !! Wait it gets better they compare this to MILK.. Leave it out and it could make you sick ///or maybe KILL you!.. Kills your engine .. Sorry! Just put in as much fuel as you need to be safe ... 1/3 out 1/3 BACK AND 1/3 FOR RESERVE. .. I FLEW A PIPER ARCHER for 13 Years and felt safer than going out with my Yamaha motor for a few miles..IT'S a Fuel problem you know !!!! What is upith this company? You do not need a 5 year warrantee. You need a HONDA!

Hi,
Once again need to buy another boat cover as the current one has perished and split....

UV seems to be doing the damage be it poly or cloth made........

Anyone recommend a good brand that will last a few years hopefully........5m trailer boat. I found good deals on few of them, these guys have 20% off http://www.discountboatcover.com/boat-offer.html

Also any ideas on how to keep the cats from climbing inside, tried netting etc  Cat vs RIB...cat wins.

I have a 2003 Yamaha 150 TXRB. I have a 1/2" hole in the adapter plate under the powerhead in the rear of the motor.  Looking to see if anyone else has had the same problem. Cost to fix? Will Yamaha help with anything etc... My opinion is this should never happen I don't care how old the engine is. The motor is stored in a garage and flushed after every use.  I would really like to hear some comments solutions etc.. to my problem. Thanks!

I am thinking of buying a 200 yamaha outboard engine that is 3 years old. Any tips or faults, what sort of hours would you expect it to have done?
Thanks

My yamaha 100hp 4 stroke engine. It starts fine, idles fine, revs fine when on the trailer hooked up to hose. But when in the water, does all of the above but when you put it in gear it stalls! What is wromg.
