yeah, i have the same problem too on my Subaru Legacy L 1995. But the car is running fine. No problem at all. |

I have the same problem. However, the light disappears after a few seconds. When revving or driving I hear a winding, almost vacuum like sound. The trans shifts fine. The cruise control does not work. Trans fluid is clean and level. Its going in the shop in a day or so. |

My AT OIL TEMP comes on after my car run for a just a short period of time. If I run the A/C, it doesn't want to start after I turn it off and start up again. As if it's trying to turn over. When it gets to hot, the light starts flashing after I turn it off & start it again. I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow, but I don't want them to just tell me anything. I've read a lot of blogs on the AT Light, but no one has said what the problem is. Can you give me some idea of what might be my problem? ...2003 Legacy AWD [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

Same problem here. 2000 Forester. Came on after 10 minutes city (40 -50 mph) plus 20 minutes highway (65-70 mph) driving. Blinking approx. once a second. Recently had the driver's side head gasket replaced, valve cover gasket replaced, new timing and pump belts, new CV boot. (Likely totally unrelated, but want to supply all info.) Checking fluid level at lunch. [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

I have a 2001 Forester. As part of the 75k servicing, it had a CV boot replaced and engine belts replaced. Two days later, after starting the car, the "At Oil Temp" light blinked, I shut off the car, then turned it back on. Then the "At Oil Temp" light started blinking with the "Check Engine Light" coming on solid. The dealer checked the car, got code P0778, checked to see if that was the problem, drove the car with diagnostic gear, found nothing, so cleared the fault. Three weeks later, the lights come on again in the same sequence. The dealer got the same code P0778, cleaned all easily accessible wiring harness connectors, transmission control module connectors, cleared fault code and reset warning lights. I got into the car right after all that and the "At Oil Temp" light was blinking. They still have the car. I had no problems with this at all until after that 75k check. What was so special about what was done to cause this to happen? Anyone have this issue and got it resolved? If so, what was the resolution? Thanks! -LP [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

Must be that time of the year. Had my 80,000 mile oil changed on my 2003 Subaru Forester and voila! AT OIL TEMP light flashing after about 30 miles of driving. I opened the hood and noticed a couple loose hoses, which I tightened. Haven't seen the flashing light again after about 30 more miles of driving, but will take it in this evening and have them check what the "idiot code" is. [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

I just got both the check engine (solid light) & AT Oil temp (blinking) come on yesterday on my 2003 Forester. I'm going to be honest with you all, I have no clue when it comes to mechanical things on cars. It seems the car drives fine, but does not shift correctly. Nothing leaking. A shop that works on my vehicles did the diagnostic test and told me it was a P0748 trouble and to take it to the dealer as they don't work on transmissions. I did drop it off today at dealership service dept., and now am sweating bullets that this will cost me an arm & leg. Can anyoone tell me how much $$$ this has cost them? Just had the same problem. The check engine and AT Oil Temp lights both came on after my son accidently drained the transmission fluid during an engine oil change. The fluid look too dark so we decided to change it. The lights came on right after we completed the job. The AT Oil Temp light flashed initially. We adjusted the fluid level and the AT Oil Temp light then went out after a few seconds, however, the check engine light stays on with a P0748 code. I checked another forum and found the following info (not a Subaru site): "Condition Some owners of the above vehicles with a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E transaxle may comment on harsh upshifts or harsh garage shifts, soft shifts, shudders on hard acceleration, or shifts erratic. These conditions may appear intermittently or set a DTC P1811 or P0748. During diagnosis, a low or high line pressure (actual versus desired) may be observed. Cause The above condition may be due to any one of the following which may affect line pressure output: Sediment inside the pressure control (PC) solenoid valve, causing the PC solenoid valve to mechanically bind. Sediment in the valve body, causing the torque signal regulator valve to stick. Incorrect transaxle oil level." Any help would be appreciated. [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

Mine just started - it flashes 16 times at start up and goes out. My local Subaru guru tells me that this has to do with the 4x4 solenoid (the thing that allows auto switching to 4wd). They have to pull off the rear end of the transmission to get to it. While there, they look at the clutch pack and tail housing. If you make sharp turn and it "hops" it may need these other two repairs. Repair cost $300 to replace the solenoid - can go up to $1200 if other repairs needed. I am going in on Thursday to have it repaired. Especially now that it snowing here in The Rockies! [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

My 97 Legacy GT (75k miles) started doing the same at startup. Unhooked (-) batt cable to reset computer. Was fine for 6 weeks then it has started again. My dealer has no clue and I have not requested a service check. Seems to run just fine. All maint has been done as specified by Subaru. [Posted from : UNITED STATES] |

My 97 Outback Limited (150k miles) just started flashing the AT Oil Temp at startup. It flashes anywhere from 3-4 times all the way up to 10-12 times. Since it only occurs when the engine is cold, I conclude that it has more to do with fluid flow/pressure rather than a temperature condition. Since I have such high milage on the car, I would not be interested in dropping $1500+ into trying to figure out what the issue is. I assume this high cost of repair due to where I live in Calif. (San Fran Bay Area) and that once the repair shop gets into dropping and cracking open drive train components, other items should be replaced at that time. I think I would rather put that expense towards buying a new vehicle. So I am going to take my chances and drive my Outback into the ground. It has held up so well so far, that I expect I will easily get another 25k out of it. Cheers |

Hello my sons 97 subaru started to flash hot temp light after driving around town. I drained the transmission fluid, dropped the tranny pan and changed the transmission filter. He has been driving it around town and the light hasn't came back on. So maybe this might help you guys on your problem. |

I get the AT oil temp light too, but also my '01 Subaru Forrester won't start. All the lights, radio, a/c come on so it's not a battery problem, but it won't start. Any ideas? JK |

My 97 Subaru Outback Legacy showed the At Oil Temp light a couple times before, but started after turning key second time. Just drove it about 400 miles and tried starting it this morning. It won't start and shows check engine and at oil temp light. The transmission and engine were just rebuilt a month ago does anyone have any idea what's going on? |

97 Legacy GT w/ 131,000. My AT Temp light came on for the first time today and at the same time the engine died. Started right up again, the light flashed a few times and then it seemed to be OK. Any idea what's going on? The engine quitting like that - kind of scary. Don't know if it's relevant, but yesterday I had the engine coolant temp. sensor replaced, which I beleive involved moving a lot of stuff out of the way. Thanks! |

I have a 1999 subaru legacy - check engine light stays on and the AT Temp light will come on at different times with no consistency - the car will sound like it is winding out at 25mph then if the gas is pushed will "clunk" and go up to 40mph then clunk again....I have has the car to a trans specialist he dropped tran changed fluids & filter said the tran was shifting fine However.. not the problem...SOOO.. He thought it may be the throttle position sensor so i had a new on put in for 2nd gear , nope not that. I then took it to the Subaru Dealer and they had the car for 3 days and in that time the light did not come on and the car did not do anything unusual... AMAZING!! Now we are off to another tran specialist---I am going to lose my mind soon...I will let you know the outcome hopefully it will not be to costly...Any suggestions would be of great help |

ok, i live in colorado. i had the same problem, and after 15 miles stop and go, i would always get atoil temp light, with cruise control light flashing. so i took it to subaru, and they recomended a flush, in fact the guy flushed mine twice, for the same price, so he didnt have to open up the trany and cost me more money to change the new internal filters. any way, after a couple flushes, and new oil. i havn't had a problem. at the same time i had my trans axels oil changed too. hope this helps. it cost me $277.00 also if your using dextron III, or red atf, your going to cause more vibrations, and could cook up the oil easier. NAPA has products for flushing, see if they have any recomendations. also could use royal purple, a few people i checked with sait it would be a great, if not better replacment for the subaru ATF-HP. even royal purples gear oil for the dealer gear oil. just if your curious. |

Hi Ive had the same problem as many of you. Randomly driving a 200 mile stretch (As I do almost weekly) I stopped to rest about halfway, started it up got on the highway and about 60mph I was still in 2nd gear, my AT Oil Temp light started flashing so I pulled over and cut the engine. After about 20 minutes on the phone with subaru I started it up and no lights came on and she drove fine. Next day AT oil temp came on flashing, then the check engine light came on. Brought it to a shop and it was throwing a P0748 code. (Pressure Control Solenoid A) My transmission was overheating (the fluid was bubbly when checked) and it was flushed about 5k miles ago with no problems until now. Could it just be a loose connector wire? (Seeing as the engine was replaced recently and most of the necessary components were not attached properly.) |

The car drives okay but still worries me. my car is in the shop and not sure whats really going on. The dealer still hasn't got back to me. |

I bought a 99 subaru outback last year &@ a week the AT oil light starts flashing. Take back to the used car dealership. Reset the idiot light. AT light back on @ 3 days. Back to used car dealership. They replaced the throttle position sensor and checked all vacuum lines for leaks. AT fliud color/viscosity normal(not bubbly)correct level(not low). Reset code. 4days later, AT oil temp flashing again. I discovered if i stopped the car after driving 5-10 min. placed @park,restarted car, the light reset. I had a warranty, and my trans shop convinced me if I had the tranny rebuilt, problem would be solved. $1,700 later, even with 6 solenoids replaced, AT light still flashing. Trans shop said it was prob an elec short somewhere & would take hrs to trace. Error codes P1706 and P1705 2-4 brake PC solenoid valve circuit malfunction. I just kept resetting AT light by stopping/restart(when AT light flashes, tranny defaults /stays@3rd gear.). After 6months of doing this, the AT light eventually would not reset anymore with park/restart. My low tech tranny shop said I prob would have to take it to a dealer or someone who had the hi tech diag tools to figure out the problem After asking 2 mechanics and looking@Tranny reviews by customers@my PC, I consulted W/Atlas Trans. After $354 and 2 days of tracing, Joe concluded it was the TCM(Transm Control Module) using a Snap-on Soul portable diag. A new one from dealer would cost $705. I s/w F&S used parts able to get pn#31711AE311@$50 plus S/H. Atlas will put in this week for $45. Will et U know if this worked...SL |

My AT temp light has also been flashing after about 20 minutes of driving. I took it to the dealership and they said I need a new transfer clutch pack and duty solenoid, basically that my clutch was slipping causing the oil to heat up. I didnt have them fix it due to the cost. I then had a local transmission shop look at it and he said that if the fluid was bright red still, the oil was not getting burnt and that I just needed a new temperature sensor. Apparently, he said that this was an inside scam that Subaru uses to bilk people out of money. Anyone heard of this before? My car has no problem when it automatically shifts while driving and my fluid looks bright red as if it were just changed. Any ideas? |
