You could take a look at here:

http://homedeco.geniosity.co.za/2006/02/09/killing-maggots/

It seems there are a few answers there, like boiling water...

Spray floors, walls, under cabinets, cracks and crevices, sides of appliances, like your refrigerator and stove with ORTHO Home Defense Max. After a day or two wash visible areas with disinfectant that won't hurt the surface, if bleach won't hurt the surface that is what I recommend. You can get it from Lowes, and it won't hurt hardwood floors either!. You should also spray the siding of your house, garbage cans and grounds where food may stand.  If you have a pet don't bring bowls from outside, in, have one for outside and one for inside as eggs may be on them.

I had maggots on my rabbit.  I found that you should remove them using a mixture of 4 parts water and 1 part povidone iodine ("betadine")or household (3%) hydrogen peroxide.  Keep the area clean and dry.  Contact the vet as soon as possible.

remember that maggots are fly larvae. if you let some get away and you see flies in your room, you know why! get some fly spray. and maybe dont keep food in your room ;)

Ok I have a Maggot problem that I dont understand. I am finding Maggots in my bedroom. I was keeping a close on on my room one day and realized I saw a Maggot and I got rid of it and didnt think to much of it. Then the following day I discovered more. Now it was unusual I was finding more and more. So I watched my room carefully and poof like a magic trick there were maggots on my celing again. I am not sure where they are coming from. I did think at 1st they were coming from my Rabbit's cage. And last night I saw 3 Maggots in the Rabbit Cage. I have no Idea what to do anymore. I am so confused and I want the creepy little suckers gone. Does anyone know what I can do?

the fact they are on the ceiling suggests you have something dead in there- probably a rat. dead animals in the ceiling are pretty rank, so if you dont want to deal with it if you can find a manhole in the ceiling consider setting off a roach bomb in there. that should kill most of the flies and maggots. eventually the dead animal will mummify and the problem will stop. if you have a strong stomach the best thing to do would be to get it out of there...

Boil water and place on the maggots, drown them in the hot water. NOT COLD - HOT!Use bleach and using bleach is the best way.I get maggots all the time having 12 dogs, and a number of farm animals.Maggots in your bin is no biggie, just boil the water tip it in, go back later and empty you bin.

12/4/2007 6:04:55
as stated above, maggots are fly larvae. if you can keep the flies out, you will stop the problem. since its a fireplace im guessing the flies will always be able to get in. all you can do is keep spraying really strong fly spray in there (surface spray is best) until they stop. once the animal mummifies, they will stop regardless...

I think I have a dead rat somewhere in my ceiling. There are maggots falling from the ceiling by the bu-coos. What do I do? I have no way of getting to the dead rat without tearing my ceiling apart! Is there any way I can kill the maggots, and if I cant, will they keep multiplying?

arggggg maggots my first encounter!
They are under my oven/ stove, i smelt something funky this morning & in the afternoon i was cooking and found my dog eating something from the ground, maggots!!! will they harm my dog, should i take him to the vet?

How do i get rid of these maggots, my first instinct was to pour boiling water & bleach on them this helped but some maggots just kept moving, i tried burning them but that didnt work so i squashed them. Im scared that there are more under my oven, what else can i do the get rid of them,

i have answered this a few posts above. maggots are just fly larvae. your dog will be fine, and probably better off for having all that extra protein! maggots hatch from something rotten, maybe youve dropped something under your stove or more likely there is a dead animal there or in a wall cavity- a mouse or rat most likely. if you can find the animal, get rid of it. if you cant you will just have to use surface spray around that area to kill the maggots and wait for the animal to be too decomposed for the flies to bother with. you will know this when the smell goes away ;-)

Hi.  I've been searching this and other sites for answers about how to kill and prevent maggots.  It's so time consuming to read all of the comments.  I want to save someone the hours I've just spent!  Here's a summary of what I've found:

* With chemicals:  products containing PERMETHRIN like:  Doggie shampoo (heat water until boiling and use a strong amount of doggie shampoo); lice shampoo; lice bedding spray; RAID Wasp & Hornet Killer; Raid Fumigator (a fogger) which is 12.6% Permethrin; Raid Ant & Roach Killer (Outdoor Fresh Scent); Raid Max Foaming Wasp Killer; Hot Shot Wasp Killer with Permethrin.  More chemical solutions:  Snail and slug bait; Draino & hot water; Pledge; Fantastic or Formula 409; hairspray; brake cleaner; carburator cleaner; motor oil; gasoline; gallon of boiling water with a cup of bleach and cup and half to two cups of hydrogen peroxide. Note:  DONT PUT BLEACH AND AMMONIA ON ANYTHING AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!!

* Without chemicals:  Putting a napkin down and stepping on the maggots; using boiling water by sweeping them all into a bucket and pour boiling water over them or picking them up with tweezers and dumping them into boiling water; sweeping them into a pile and putting them into a plastic bag in the freezer until dead; holding a steam iron close to the maggots and hitting the steam button; using a steam cleaner on the carpets (they come right to the surface); using double-sided tape (you can trap them to a specific area); filling an open plastic container with beer and putting it near the problem area (maggots crawl into it and drown).

* PREVENTION:  Use self-sealing trash cans indoors; Seal non-garbage disposable food; make sure your outdoor bins are sealed (No overfilling); put up fly strips near your barrels or in every room of the house; if you smell a foul smell - find the source; pour a cup or two of bleach down your sinks, bath and disposal once every two weeks to eliminate any debris and bacteria breeding grounds (bacteria smells draw flies); bleach rinse all barrels once a month (this is a good idea even if you already line your barrels with plastic bags and seldom spill); screen all windows and doors and replace or patch torn screens; kill flies by darkening the larger rooms and leave a brightly lit bathroom open (when the fly makes his way to the light, enter the bathroom, close the door and finish it off instead of chasing it around the house); throw out old meat the day of or one day before the trash is taken out; wash out any pop/beer cans or food residue in the recycle bin (they will attract flies), tie your garbage super tight so the flies do not get in; dispose of fallen fruit from fruit trees and do not leave pet food outdoors.
Hope this helps!

Now for serious things...If any of you up there ^ lol that is stuck with maggots and owns rabbits pleaseeeeeeeeeee check your rabbits twice a day for possible fly strike! It can kill your rabbit in less than 24 hours! Some flies are even attracted to the bunny itself not just its feces. The fly will deposit its eggs on the bunny's butt or anywhere on the bunny where there is a damp area or a healing cut. In within hours the eggs will hatch and here comes the monster larvae digging into your bunny's skin. You need to catch it before that happens or your bunny will die. Remove it will tweezers one by one. Fast!!!! I heard vaseline can be applied to prevent the larvae from moving. But soon as you done all this you need to rush to your vet with your bunny for antibiotics. Do not run water on the eggs cause it will make them hatch faster!!!!

Had them inside my outside garbage.  When I moved it, they spread all over my back patio and in my grass and carport.  I tried everything.  Pesticide, boiling water, bleach, setting them on fire, salt, permethrine, hairspray... but there were so many of them, the more I got rid of, the more they showed up.  So then I was going through my cabinets and found pet care carpet powder by Arm & Hammer. I was desperate so I decided to try it, and it worked.  As soon as it touch them, or they touched it, they started to curl up and die.I hope this helps

Greetings from Lawnguyland.(Long Island) Found maggots in the bottom of my outside garbage bin. A true suburban nightmare. I tried clorox bleach- which did not kill them; they just raced out of the bottom of the bin or up the sides (bin has a hole in the bottom). WELL- I THEN BOILED UP SOME WATER IN MY KETTLE AND POURED IT IN THE BIN AND ONTO THE GROUND UNDER THE BIN AND -BAM! THEY DIED INSTANTLY! THEY WERE BOILED/COOKED. Wish I had read about the boiling water first, because I breathed in some of the bleach vapors and my lungs are hurting now. It's great because you don't have to worry about any poison chemicals. I used 3 full kettles of super hot, boiling water until I was sure all the maggots were dead. I saturated the ground in case there were any hidden in the ground. Just had to be very careful that I didn't burn myself from the splashing boiling water. (Yes, the water must be boiling hot). The point is to cook them, not give them a bath. I wore safety goggles. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

for those with problems with their bins, what i do is to put food that will really stink in the freezer. then put it in the bin on bin night. you are going to get a lot more flies if you have week-old lobster in your bin ;-)

the other thing to do with bins is to spray good quality SURFACE spray around the rim of your bin. this will stop most flies surviving when they squeeze past the lid. some may still lay eggs, but much less likely.

prevention is better (or easier) than cure.

Hmmm.. We rent a house with a "furnace closet"...Pretty damn scary closet, it's got a gas furnace from the 1920's with pipes and shi* so I used it to store my trash instead of keeping it in cans outside for the neighborhood dogs to tip and treat themselves... Bad Bad Bad idea....especially since the door only gets opened twice a week to throw another bag of trash in... Well needless to say somthing nasty got put in the trash and into this closet and now I'm dealing with maggots in my house.. I've killed about 100 today... Nothing is killing them, not bleach water not arm and hammer nothing...So I'm vacumming them up 2 by 2 or 5 by 5 how many ever decide to come out of the carpet at a time..... ARGGGGG this is nasty!! And I'll throw the vacumn bag away (in my trash bin I bought today!)after they all come out...if they all come out... Maggots are freaking nasty!! And smashing them....that's tricky. You think it's squashed then it wiggles away... NICE.....Barf..

thank god i'm not alone.
leigh n jay, you attach yourself to that flamethrower at the hip, because i am about to take you through three (3) iterations of the maggot horror and sequel stories.

MAGGOTS1) 2 weeks ago, i saw 1 - no 2 - no, 12,453,556,etc. at the threshold of my den into my living room.  Hot Shot Flying Insect Spray (my life partner, soul mate, only chemical w/which i cannot live without)stopped them long enough for me to get them out and to the curb - they left in the truck the next day, along with the kitchen garbage which i assumed they came from but was too chicken to check, so i just took the plastic bin w/bag, enclosed the whole 9 yds. in 3 more bags, and didn't wave good-bye when the truck came by.

MAGGOTS2 - BABIES GROW UP) OK,so a week later i still look at every anomaly on the floors, walls, and ceilings with terror, things have remained maggot neutral for enough time that i'm no longer sucking down no doz all night to stay alert against a new attack.

so it's down to the !!!BASEMENT!!!(didn't ya just know?) to do laundry and clean. after a while, back up for 1/2 hr. tv, and then back down to empty drier.
i left the light at the top of bment steps on earlier, opened door and...
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!! ok, only 3 little buzzers but they knotted my knickers in a hurry.  Hot Shot dispatched the little bastards in a new york minute, and i decided on a comfort food break.
20 mins later, Hot Shot by my side, slowly down i went step by step by step -
stepping on and around zillions of those bucking fuzzers as they lay on their backs moving their little legs back and forth. AARRGH.  there are 3 rooms down there - in 2, i found only dead and dying.  room #3 was the jackpot - i filled the room with HS and ran.

the basement room filled with them is right underneath the den/storage room where i found all those maggots before, in one pile.  i've checked - the floor and the ceiling are loose.  did garbage diners go down, or did cadaver dwellers go up?   and could someone please get that laundry out of the drier?

MAGGOTS3 ONE SIZE FITS ALL) enough. yes, one size does fit all, by which i mean not all maggots are flies.  so maggots3, which has  appeared at a theater too close to me is all about moth larvae.  isn't nature grand?  in my den/storage room i store birdseed for the feeders, and clean used clothing for the blind folk.  so the new mucking fa...?  fackinng muggots are larvae from at least one, if not two, of god's darling little creatures.

sprayed 'em, waited for 2 days spraying them again and again, waited 2 more spaying them again and again... managed to kill a couple of their ancestors - but they still wiggle on.

so with boiling water and tweezers, i'm off to meet them, up close and personal.

oh - by the way - DO NOT blame my honey HOT SHOT. He disappeared from all store shelves near you (and me) because (and i do quote) "it's the end of the season, no one's having trouble with bugs anymore."

thanks for the suggestions.  and the moral support.

They are in my carpet. Everywhere.I have doused it with boiling water and pinesol.Tomorrow I get a steam cleaner. Will try the arm and hammer pet sprinkle stuff.I don't wish them a horrible death, and feel bad causing another living thing pain, even though they are maggots. They do serve a purpose just not in my carpet...but all the same they didn't ask to be there and I feel bad killing them. But I know they will take over.I will also try the lice or dog shampoo. My carpet was $3000 so getting rid of it isn't a choice.Guess I can wait for them to hatch and get some fly traps. They are really disgusting. okay i found out it was not a maggot, but a bag worm from a tree limb that was stuck to a blanket that went through the wash with bleach and in the dryer with hot heat and did not die. thank goodness!!

I noticed maggots crawling on my kitchen ceiling ...How Gross!!...we checked in the cabinets and found their nesting shells under a oatmeal box with a webbie chalky substance. there were quite a few that had nested. We threw away the dry food packages, like flour and a few recycle bags we had purchased from certain markets that had one or two maggots crawling on them.  Also, one of the bedrooms near the kitchen have a lot of small moths that breed in the closet we have tried placing moth cakes but they still keep coming back. How do you get rid of moths, why do they keep breeding in the closet? Do maggots come from moths?

YUUUUCK! We went on a long vacation, only to return to a broken refrigerator!
I had a whole chicken in the freezer which MAGGOTS IMPLODED!

Not knowing what to do, (and being TOTALLY GROSSED OUT), I've taken the fridge outside, hosed it out, & sprayed it with a whole bottle of OxyClean spray. Left it to SOAK over night. (OKAY... THIS IS THE POINT THAT I'M AT NOW).  Tomorrow I plan on hosing it down again, then cleaning it with BLEACH., THEN?...
HELLLLLLLP!!!!  PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE!! I'm DESPERATE!!! and PHYSICALLY ILL!!!!

Is this going to do the trick!??? HOW can I be SURE that there are NOT EGGS in the cracks and crevices???   WILL MY FRIGE BE SAFE and CLEEEEEEEEAN EVER AGAIN!???

If you have maggots in your bedroom, the likely hood is that they are coming from above the ceiling.

I just bought a home in Novemeber 2008. Really did not have huge bug problem. However the house did have mice and still does. We need to repair the whole in the wall under the sink and then get a CAt to solve most the issue. The traps have not worked.
But just a few days ago, I had the same problem. Had maggots all over the floor and they just migrated in all different parts of the house. Such as the hallway, kitchen and living room carpet. Or they could be coming from all parts of the house.
I poured boric acid all over the house to get rid of the infestation of cockroaches I just discovered a couple days ago. So maybe the boric acid brought them out. NOT SURE though????
I flushed everyone I saw down the toilet and bombed the house to discover a bunch of dead ones. Then the next day there was more dead ones and some that were somewhat living. Then I discovered a few that had already turned into cacoons yesterday. I am so disgusted, because I spend so much time trying to keep my house spotless. And to have this happen is a complete insult to my cleaning abilites. We have a huge fly problem too. I think that is due to all the farm animals in the neighborhood. So it could either be something dead like a bird, rat, mouse etc. or just plain out Fly Larvae. Not sure. But I havent seen any maggots since. I hope they dont come back. I am doing everything right now to quarantine my kids from certain areas in the house.

urgh, i was emptying my dustbin, i pulled out the bin liner and i thort there was rice stuck at the bottom of the bin liner, i tried to brush them off but they suddenly started wriggling around and i screamed, disgusted. they were under the bin liner trying to get inside and they were feeding on loose tea. i just threw them in the dustbin outside but yesterday wen i emptied the bin this time after cleaning it i smelled sumthin funny wen i closed the bin lid. i stopped and turned around and saw a maggot crawling on the bin. the little bastard was crawling so fast and i shone my torch over it. i dont think it has a face, just a mouth cuz it was crawling forward and backwards, and as gross as it sounds it was just a bubble. the maggot was a bubble full of food, i could see right through it. i threw salt over it, vinegar made it squirm, and fly spray but none of them killed it. i squashed it in the end. if it is true that boiling water kills them. then wen i die i hope someone spills a load of hot water on me, i wud rather be burnt with hot water than have those sick *!$#ers eating me.

I just found a maggot in my folder at my desk at work! can someone please tell me how it could possibly get there.  I dont have food laying around my desk, and the only time I do is when I eat lunch.  And I also want to know if maggots are harmful to the human body?

Bebe, if you're a zombie you might have problems. Maggots only eat dead flesh. They're otherwise harmless.

i own a small restaurant and the dumpster was filled with maggots.  I've learned that bleach works very well.  General insecticide doesnt really work at all.  Remember, when in doubt, BLEACH CAN KILL ANYTHING! EVEN HUMANS - JUMP INTO A BLEACH POOL AND SEE HOW LONG YOU LIVE.

Well we have noticed a fly problem here in the neighborhood, we live in a nice country area in the south.  i had noticed a fly or two when i opened the trash bin and just sprayed them and killed them.........tonight my husband opened the bin and it had thousands of maggots in it we used bleach at first big mistake they poured out the top, our bin was white with them.  we tried everything in the house nothing worked so just for a last hail mary i put the kettle on to boil and poured it over them and where it hit they died.  so we put huge pots of water on to boil and finally they are dead.  save some time use boiling water right off and they will die.  from this point on when i have meat packages they will be put in the freezer until trash day.......I HATE FLIES AND THEIR CHILDREN ARE WORSE THAN THEY ARE.  HAGD AND GOOD LUCK

Joanie, I'd just give it a warm soapy bath and a bit of milk. It might be fine. The maggots won't be hurting it.

Poop, you need to visit a chemist to get intestinal worming treatment. And try keeping your mouth away from your dogs rear end so u don't catch them again.

to all of you people who I hope are just trying to mess with others on the board here, Let me clue you into to something.
THE MAGGOTS YOU SAY ARE IN YOUR DOGS BUTT HOLE ARE PROB (NOT)and I repeat (NOT)
MAGGOTS but more likely your dog has tape worms and for a mere ten bucks at petco you can buy product called "Tape worm tabs" active ingriedient is PRAZIQUANTEL. your mistaken maggots which really are tape worms will be gone within several hours. But now you need to make sure you treat the Flea problem that causes tape worms because as your giving you dog or cat this lil pill to kill the worms, the cat or dog ten minutes later could eat another flea that will cause yep you guessed it more tape worms!
