HIt rock, starts ok but no power

I hit a rock with my B&S 7 hp lawnmower. It stopped the engine. It still starts ok on the first pull and runs steady. It seems to have lost power and boggs down when I start to cut the grass. I disconnectd the plug cable and rotated the blade by hand. There is some compression but I am not sure how much is normal. Can I use a compression guage at the plug hole to see if the compresion is ok or could there be another problem? thanks!

you probably sheared the flywheel key when you hit the rock. the mower will run but the timing is so far off it wont ake any power. are you at all handy with repairs?

Yes...What is involved in installing a new key? I have an exploded view of the parts for the engine but no repair manual.
