Programming for game purpose

Dear sir/madam,

Hello, im Josh, a student from Conventry University, currently are in the finally year for my Software Engineering programme. Im very interested in multimedia, therefore, i choose to do the multimedia project. The project title is "A STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF A WINDOWS-BASED VIRTUAL BABY USING 3D MODELING TECHNIQUES". This project addresses issues on a study of 3D techniques concepts and it focuses on the development or design of a windows-based virtual baby. The virtual baby is an application that acts like a real baby which has these behaviors of eating, crying, sleeping, laughing, moving, and others. The user can interact with the virtual baby by using mouse to give commands such as touching, feeding, slapping, playing, dragging and dropping the virtual baby anyway around the monitor screen.

The purpose i wrote this letter is because im facing some major problems to begin this project. I hope that to get some advise or help from you to start this project. My supervisor suggested me to use JAVA to code this application. But im confuse that is it suitable for it? other than JAVA, Visual Basic, C and C++ programming language which programming language are suitable to code for this program or for gamming purpose.

Since this project are using 3D modeling techniques, im using 3d Studio MAX to draw the baby. May be some other graphic application tools are required to implement the baby model, so, which one i should use? (such as adobe photoshop and others).

The virtual baby also should have a limited artificial intellingence in order to make the virtual baby look like a real world baby that able to perform its behaviour. I designed the virtual baby that should know when to hungry, happy, unhappy, laught, cry, pee and others. Because this is my first time doing the multimedia project, i do not understand how the AI work and how to implement in the virtual baby as well.

The above is those major problems that i encoutered so far for now. I hope that i could get the help from you for me to accomplish this final year project. Your help will be fully appreciated.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

Maybe you could check out the Microsoft Direct3d SDK(downloadable at the microsoft site).  It should help you to more easily animate the baby and import the 3D Studio Max file in various formats to allow you to animate it. It would also be possible to run it in Internet Explorer if you use JScript or VBScript to do the programming, which means you could make it available to run on windows machines straight from the net.

Good luck

PS. I don't think your baby would really need 'artificial intelligence' to be convincing. Feeding would be done on a timer, and if not done, triggers the crying. Crying at additional times for no obvious reason can be done by calling a sub-routine random times occassionally(laughing and moving can be done this way too).  The amount of milk fed can be calculated, and when it reaches a certain level it triggers the pissing. No artificial intelligence, but I don't think babies have much 'real' intelligence anyway, so it should be convincing.
