hey, I'm a trumpet player - i'm on here cause i'm trying to find some info to help a friend - but the words 'some people just don't have the lips' is completely wrong. The problem you are going to have is that 1) Trumpet doesn't have a reed, so the lips have to do all the vibrating on their own! 2) You will probably squeeze your lips to much to get good sound Check this site out and read it - it should help you understand how trumpet playing works... http://www.bbtrumpet.com/ Try this also: relax your lips and blow just enough air to get them to flap gently (not buzz yet, just flap/flutter) - The sound effect will be kind of similar to when people 'Bbbrrrr!' on a cold day - just without the 'brrr' sound. Do that for 5 minutes or until your lips tingle... Stop and rest for five minutes... Now look in a mirror and align your lips so they are ontop of each other (not overlapped) and blow air while holding the lips together (not tightly). You should get a buzzing sound (not the flutter). When you have got that, try and slowly make the hole which is buzzing smaller and more focused so that you have a fairly round hole buzzing in the centre of your lips. Imagine you are trying to sound a bit like a giant mosquito. Aim to buzz a concert first-space 'f' (G in Bb). Then work on getting that buzz going correctly without any tonguing (think 'hooo' or 'fooo') Do this for a few minutes or if you get tired, stop and rest for twice as long as you were buzzing. Then go back and do it somemore. When you can get a Concert 'f' Without too much trouble, then a gentle/legato tongue attack - The tounging should be done behind the teeth - Think the syllables 'da','ta' or 'la' for something gentle' Remember, if you get tired, rest twice as long as you were buzzing for. if you can't get the buzz then redo the fluttering for 3 minmutes or until it tingles then rest for 5 minutes and try the above again. Once you've got buzzing under control (may take a few days) add the mouthpiece and practice buzzing into it while getting as full of a buzz as possible - avoid airyness if you can. Practice the mouthpiece with the 'hoo' or 'foo' attacks at first then move on to normal tonguing. Once the mouthpiece is working add the horn. On the horn, strive for the sound you want, but don't do something that hurts to get it - Don't push the horn against your face more than enough to make an air-tight seal. Also, do this exercises for 3-5 minutes a day until it becomes fairly easy: Hold your palm face up and Lay the trumpet trumpet on it without griping it. Now play up as high as you can and down to the G in the stave without gripping the horn and aim for a full clear to - might take a couple of weeks - on each note... All the notes i'm reffering to are all played with no valves down to make your life easy! Also, Trumpet playing shouldn't effect clarinet so long as you remember to play them like completely different instruments. Look at James Morrison - He can play all the saxes, all brass instruments (from tuba to piccolo trumpet), clarinet (when he wants to) (and bass, piano and guitar)and he can play them all exceptionally well. Hope this helps Chris |
